  • Long-term Tamper proof box/cage?
Tammy you will need client to understand that without some sort of research to prove that devices put in that type of container you cannot really validate results. It is not defensible in my opinion to just logically deduce that it does not interfere with radon levels. If client wants it done this way and will accept results with a caveat that is one thing, but how would it look on the stand when someone is suing you for providing radon results and they got lung cancer.
It has been my experience that people want a low number and they will sing it from rooftops even if testing does not meet protocols and even when first line in report says this does not meet protocols. the middle line says does not meet protocols and the last line of report says does not meet protocols.
maybe my clients are different than yours.
  • Safety Siren Radon Detector
Hi Dick we have used the safety siren for past number of years as a unofficial post mitigation device. We post test with short term e-perms and a long term alpha track but because in Canada we have most of our fans indoors we wanted something with an alarm on them to react to a potential leak. We bench test these devices when they come into our office 12 at a time, most are fairly accurate once they get to 4 days. Our last few batches however have had between 3/12 and 1/12 have to go back to manufacturer as inaccurate or non functioning. We have decided to go another way and recommend radon eye or corentium monitor be purchased by homeowner rather than have safety siren on the truck to sell at little mark-up.
  • (RRNC) a Bust?
While I once believed in the EPA style systems, our Canadian system of installing fans in the basement and sidewall discharge (ground level has been very successful in lowering radon levels for our clients. Before you jump all over me we do require sch 40 pipe above grade (basement floor), as there is no such thing as 3 or 4 inch schedule 20 pipe. Discharge studies have found that after 3 feet discharge radiation is back to background and no freezing issues.
In ten years of business i have only changed out three fans due to failure and all three of them were in attic style systems (just bad luck possibly). I never thought I would say this but somewhere along the line i have become a fan of sidewall ground level discharge radon systems.
  • Radon Pilot Program in Nova Scotia
Brian i have waited a while to see what others posted on this. I am primarily a mitigator, so i did not see it as my place ...... Free testing does not lead to a lot of mitigation's unless there is a social pressure to fix problem ie friend lends you their digital monitor, and they have already fixed their place. I used to get upset about free testing but not so much anymore. if you are not believing enough in radon to pay $50 for a DYI test or $250 for a professional test, the likelihood that you will move into mitigation is very low.
This occurs for many reasons cost, lack of current available cash, hassle factor, disbelieving test etc.
I believe until Government legislates something (tenant protection, mandatory real estate testing, or, workplace protections, radon will continue to be a "double income professional" issue. Please don't get me wrong I really like my clients and am happy to fix their radon issues.
This loan a radon device program is someone who has become aware of the radon issue in their community and is trying to do something about it ...... i just hope that the someone who is loaning it out is making people aware that their radon number might not be their number.
